Old Time Music Hall

We were made to feel welcome as soon as we walked in the door and, as the audience were seated at tables it created a very convivial atmosphere.   All the elements of a Music Hall were here.  From the effusive chairman, Ian Guttridge, to the hecklers in the audience, all of which contributed to an entertaining evening.

The show as a typical mix of songs of the period with the occasional monologue, although I wasn’t sure about including songs from Oliver and My Fair Lady!  All sung with great enthusiasm and style by the many members of the company.  Unfortunately the programme does not give individual performers names so I cannot give any specific credits, which is a shame as there were some excellent performances.

I particularly liked the ’Master and the Maid’ sketch, I have seen this done before but DAOS version was excellent and very accurate, although I would have liked the final section to have been speeded up even more!  If you haven’t seen it, this may not make sense but I do recommend it as a very strong piece of theatre.

I would have liked to see the medleys segued rather than stopping at the end of each song, I am sure it would not have been too difficult to find a succession of chords to move from one song to the next in a medley and I think it might have made the show flow more smoothly and with a better pace.

However that is a minor point, the costumes were lovely and a rollicking good evening was enjoyed by us all.
