Sept 2012

Once again we were lucky enough to have the use of

Boxmoor Playhouse, home of Hemel Hempstead Theatre

Company, for my annual District Meeting and Awards.

This was an opportunity to pass on

NODA information, which I did in my

opening remarks, and there were fact s

heets available, along with Society

flyers for their next shows.

We had a fabulous turnout of around

80 people, who enjoyed a presentation

from Rupert Sharp of Josef Weinberger’s.  Rupert imparted in depth information surrounding rights etc, and answered

many and varied questions.

I also felt that as this was a meeting

of performance-related societies, we

should have some entertainment, so

for the first time this year we were

treated to performances from the

Witches of Eastwick performed by

Sarah Nasmyth-Miller, Georgina Dalton and Anna McDonald from Harpenden Light Operatic Society, and Hairspray performed by Roxy Parkin and Damien Winchester from Dunstable Amateur Operatic Society these were greeted with much enthusiasm, and is something I will be looking to repeat next year.  I was very grateful to the performers and to Graham Thomson for providing accompaniment for the Witches!

We then moved on to the awards for individual performances – and around 90 people were honoured.  Unfortunately not all of them could attend, but those that did received a certificate, and the junior winners also received a small trophy.  The categories were as diverse as best duo, best grouping, best costumes, best actor/actress etc – followed by three special awards – one to Dave Houghton for consistent excellence in lighting and project management – and one for Gary Nash for consistent excellence in the design and build of stage sets.  Tom Pigram also received a mention for maintaining a high standard in performance.

There were homemade cakes with our teas and coffees, and time for visitors to receive a guided tour of the excellent facilities at Boxmoor.

I have had some very complimentary comments from the members who attended, it was important that they felt they got something from the morning, which they assured me they had, and I enjoyed seeing so many of my societies represented.  I was over the moon to see so many people there.

The meeting went well, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, my thanks to everyone who attended.  Dates for next year’s meeting will be available soon – so once published please put it in your diary!!!

Now the process of planning for next year starts........
